License Title:

The Certified Substance Abuse Counselor In Training, formerly known as the Registered Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor I (RADC I), is an entry-level designation for Substance Abuse Counselors in Wisconsin. The training certificate allows individuals to work under the supervision of an Intermediate or Independent Clinical Supervisor* to gain the necessary experience in performing the eight-practice dimensions and completing the required education to qualify for Substance Abuse Counselor Certification.

The Substance Abuse Counselor In Training certificate does not assure the public of competence to practice. A Counselor In Training may provide services in any of the core functions, except counseling, only if authorized by their clinical supervisor. A Clinical Supervisor* may only authorize a Substance Abuse Counselor In Training to provide counseling after one of the following requirements has been met:
The Counselor In Training has completed 300 hours of supervised training or supervised work experience in the core functions.

If a RADC I (credentialed by the WCB) converted to the Substance Abuse Counselor In Training, the credential holder may practice substance use disorder counseling after providing proof to their clinical supervisor that within the previous 5 years they have completed 100 hours of specialized education by March 1, of 2007 in any combination of the performance domains of assessment, substance abuse counseling, case management, substance abuse education and professional responsibility.

The Substance Abuse Counselor In Training certificate may be renewed no more than twice and will be valid for approximately 4 to 6 years, at which time the certificate holder must have successfully completed the requirements necessary and apply for Substance Abuse Counselor Certification.

*Notice: After June 1, 2008 Substance Abuse Counselors In Training may no longer receive supervision from Clinical Supervisors In Training.
